“If Another Earth does succeed it is in Cahill’s odd way of encapsulating us. The film is slow, but it knows why and handles its pace by touching several notes both surreal and, well, down to earth.”

This Week In Review… (July 11-July 17)

by on Jul.19, 2011, under This Week in Review

Contemporary

The cast all grown up for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It made 169 million W.W. its first weekend.

Horrible Bosses – 2.5 stars (see it)
Cave of Forgotten Dreams – 3.5 stars (see it)
Harry Potter 7.2 – 3 stars (see it)
The Trip – 3 stars (see it)

Classic
Kids – 3.5 stars (see it)

Movie Pick of the Week: Cave of Forgotten Dreams and Harry Potter 7.2
Cave of Forgotten Dreams is a great documentary that is a landmark because it finds a worthy purpose for the misbegotten 3D. Yet, Harry Potter 7.2 deserves to be witnessed because there lies the end of a franchise. Let’s shed some tears this week, preferably not in 3D though.

DVD Pick of the Week: Rango
“[Rango] pummels through enough tedious conventions that we can appreciate it as an analysis of an ugly little lionheart adorable in perspective to his inner specie. I liked Rango. I believed in Rango.”

Larry Crowne – 1.5 stars (skip it)

Classic
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! – 2 stars

Movie Pick of the Week: Life In A Day
“[In Life In A Day] parallels are formed, suggesting that human beings share genuine feelings, aspirations, and – most obviously – the curiosity to capture the day in their life.”

DVD Pick of the Week: Of Gods and Men
“It is not quite a masterpiece, but for once a film [Of Gods and Men] explains the life of religious characters not through their perfections, way of worship, or god-like passions, but their humanity. This is a humanist movie.”

David Schwimmer is the director of "Trust", the movie of the week.

Trust – 3.5 stars (see it)
Transformers: Dark of the Moon – 1 star (skip it)

Classic
Beware of A Holy Whore – 3.5 stars
Manderlay – 2.5 stars

Movie Pick of the Week: Trust
“Schwimmer, like directors Noah Baumbach and Sydney Pollack, steps away from technical exercise and frames the camera modestly on the characters. This is a director who knows he has the right material and allows his actors to engage in it.”
